Artist – Excellent Teacher Doan Van Nguyen

Artist Doan Van Nguyen was born on August 18, 1947 in Nam Dinh but lives and works mainly in Hanoi City. His father was famous poet Nguyen Van Cu. As a painter specializing in painting on traditional lacquer materials, his paintings are highly generalistic and constructive. The paintings he paints often use warm colors, thick paint, thus creating his own personal style.

In the fine art world, the elite painter – teacher Doan Van Nguyen is known as a representative face of the second-generation painter class specializing in traditional lacquer painting in Vietnam. His contributions are not only recognized in the number of huge works but also in his attitude, perseverance and passion for the unique traditional paintings of the nation.

The artist shared, “I think that in the present art of painting in the world, every nation has its own unique way of expressing. Only when a country knows how to use these ways to bring out its own identity can the development of state-of-the-art art raise its voice in the international arena. Vietnam lacquer is a type of painting art that other countries in the world do not have.

It shows the toned and healthy beauty with mystery and splendor in the way the works. The way I create lacquer paintings is different from other painting methods in the world. It requires the artist to polish the materials and colors on the surface of the work. So I researched and painted lacquer paintings for many years. I also often encourage my final year students at Vietnam Fine Arts University to be creative in this area.

I hope that Vietnam’s Lacquer art will continue to develop and gain a worthy position among art forms in the world. ”
