Lacquer, silk, toan … are quite familiar materials that Pham Tuan Tu used. In this exhibition, 45 works, including paintings, statues, are all wood. Many kinds of wood, from mediocre to rare … but all are picked by Tu himself from the pile of discarded waste, from the woodpile waiting for burning.
Have you ever tried to visualize, where do old things like tables, chairs, like a door or toilet facilities go after being replaced by new items? Some will return to their new owners, while most will become garbage. They become garbage even when they are worth using. Pham Tuan Tu has encountered such things and has started to become a scavenger for decades. There are things that you remodel, there are things you create new things, statues, paintings, pictures, whatever you want. He gave them a new life.
Is it recyclable? Is not. Is REBIRTH. It is not that he regenerated discarded woodwork, but the boards that were once considered trash gave birth to another Pham Tuan Tu in art. He put away all the paint, painted and enchanted with wood. It was the wooden boards that gave him new excitement.
And another story may be suggested “From a thousand green”. The way Pham Tuan Tu is doing, may not help to reduce the fallen trees, the destroyed forests! But most of all, it can help someone to appreciate some of his old things, so as not to rush away when he can use them just to chase the endless material needs of life today.
