From expressionism to abstractionism

Abstract painting is an “abstract” term, and it is best perceived intuitively, which answers the question “How does this painting make you feel?”

Arcording to online Encyclopaedia Britannica, Expressionism is an art style, in particular, the artists will paint their emotions and their subjective responses for things, contexts occured around them. They achieves their purposes by distorting, exaggerating, simplifying and imaginating, as well as by the implimentation of motley, audacious, overwhelming and vivid aspects into their artworks.

The basic premise of abstraction- incidentally also an important issue in aesthetics- are visual factors of a painting (or a sculpture) as important as its representativeness (if we don’t want to say it is more). This radically came from Plato’s declaration that those non-natural images (circle, square, triangle, …) possess the absolute and constant beauty. Therefore, they can judge a picture only by its shapes and colors.

From ordinary expression, the abstract artworks will absolutely surpass its appearance to only display the mental language of the artist.

Until 1945, modern art’s centre moved from Paris to New York, where had the pioneering representation was abstract expressionism. Was born in The era of Recession and War World II, this movement was leaded by Jackson Pollock (1912-1956), Mark Rothko (1903-1970), Willem De Kooning (1904-1997), Clyfford Still (1904-1980), Barnett Newman (1905-1970) and Adolph Gottlieb (1903-1974).

It was a broad movement, including different styles in which (as mentioned) had semi-abstract or non-abstract artworks like those artworks specific by its way of using paint as picture of Jackson Pollock, and those artworks of Willem de Kooning.

Later, abstract expressionism has born some separate styles under the guardian of rear Abstraction- a counter modal trend. Generally, “an abstract artworks would obtains two values: Internal mentality of the artist and the value of exploring the mind of the person who sees it.”
