Biography of Painter Mai Dac Linh

Mai Dac Linh was born in 1970 in Hanoi.

In 1993, he graduated from Hanoi Fine Arts University and is currently a member of Vietnam Fine Arts Association.

During his artistic career, he held three solo exhibitions and participated in three group ones in Vietnam, China and France. In 1995, he won Bronze Medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition.

Sparkling light on deep colors is Painter Mai Dac Linh’s found art concept. Seeking a different expression from Western painting, which is using light, Mai Dac Linh has come to the two-dimensional space of images and lines. With only gaps and symbols, a painting language was found in rough pictures like ancient carvings we often encounter in Buddhism.

By searching and understanding, he uses images, sign language, how to create patterns based on embossed motifs to express his own deep feelings and thoughts.

The painter is influenced by Buddhist thought, with ideas and philosophies about human life in the spiritual life of Vietnamese people. Familiar forms such as the lotus, spiral, and square-round symbol in Yin-Yang philosophy are easily encountered. This symbolic description reminds us of deep traditional values.

Through unique lines, he tells stories of life, the law of reincarnation. Using the combination of deep-colored patches with strong and slender lines, he creates the taciturn, and the color of time spreading over sediments that have left impressions like the green enamel of ancient bronze objects.

However, somewhere in the large patches with deep colors, small patches of light sparkly shimmer. That sparkle reminds us of a person living quietly and thoughtfully but has a strong soul inside. It takes a long, deep look to see this subtlety of his – Painter Mai Dac Linh.

The success of artist Mai Dac Linh is that he found a language of expression which is rich in symbolism and eastern identity.
